say what you will about “feckless” jimmy carter, he forced menachim begin and anwar sadat to sit down and hammer out a peace aggreement between israel and egypt. it cost sadat his life but the peace holds to this day.
the framework for peace between israel and the palestinians was ironed out in oslo norway decades ago. if there was any real leadership in the world, someone would grab the leaders of both sides to the table and finish the deal. then the un could boots on the ground and enforce the treaty for as long as necessary.
A deal will only have a chance after Hamas is gone. "Kill all Jews" as a part of its credo pretty much negates the ability to negotiate any deal with that entity. And don't depend on the UN for much of anything. They just moved out of Hezbolah's way in southern Lebanon. The Egypt-Israel deal only worked with plenty of $$$ and no real argument about land claims. Tellingly, Egypt did not want Gaza back as part of the Sinai return. The only sliver of good news right now is Iran is really really really denying they had any role as they may have overplayed their hand here as more US ships move towards the region.
But this is going to be long, ugly and deadly for many innocents.
